Mount Totumas Cloud Forest is a 400-hectare site just a few kilometres from the Costa Rican border. The site borders La Amistad National Park, which consists largely of rainforest and cloud forest. To date, 263 species of amphibians and reptiles have been discovered, the majority of them lizards. The proximity to this national park contributes directly to the ecological integrity and rich biodiversity of the Mount Totumas Cloud Forest. The lodge's mission is to protect and preserve the Mount Totumas Cloud Forest as it provides an important buffer zone for the wilderness in La Amistad National Park. The preservation of biodiversity and the reforestation of former pastures are an important part of this mission. The resort is powered by renewable energy from its own micro-hydropower plant.
The lodge - the highest eco lodge in Panama - is only accessible from Volcán via an off-road track. It is therefore very remote, at 1900 metres above sea level, in the middle of nature, but still has many amenities such as electricity, hot water, wifi and even its own coffee plantation!
The large window fronts and a deck are perfect for observing animals and gazing at the starry night sky. The lodge is an ideal starting point for hikes in the surrounding area - on your own or with a local English-speaking guide (bookable directly on site). There are nine marked, but not paved, hiking trails of various lengths and levels of difficulty. The area is a dream for birdwatchers (quetzals, 15 different species of hummingbirds, etc.) but many other animal species such as various monkey species, tapirs and mountain lions can also be spotted with a bit of luck. Botanists can enjoy a wide range of orchids, bromeliads, flowers and trees!
